Brother Compatible Ink Cartridges in the UK: Recovering From an Error Condition

Brother Inkjet printers are popular in the UK because they are affordable, reliable and deliver high quality printed output in both colour and black. Using Brother compatible ink cartridges rather than branded ones can help control printing costs. Here's some information about how to recover from an error condition after replacing the ink cartridge.

It Happens to All of Us

There's not a printer user in the UK who hasn't experienced a printer error condition. Although the causes of such problems aren't always easy to identify, there is a fairly easy way to clear them by using a procedure called a "power cycle." The most common situation in which you'd need to perform a power cycle is one in which the printer doesn't recognise that a new cartridge has been installed. Even the best quality compatible printer ink cartridges may still register as empty, sending the printer into an error cycle. Before you panic, why not try the following simple solution?

Reasons to Power Cycle Your Printer

Power cycling a printer, also known as resetting or clearing the printer, gives your printer a fresh start and should be the first thing you try when experiencing a problem after changing ink toner cartridges. Even though it seems like a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem, it has a very good chance of succeeding. A power cycle is a way of "starting over" by clearing the printer's memory and allowing it to reset. It then should recognise that a new ink jet cartridge has been installed.

An Important Distinction

It's important to remember that turning a printer off by using the power switch is not the same as unplugging it. Even when a printer is turned off, if it remains plugged in; power is still going to some components. Removing power to all the printer's components gives you the best chance to clear the problem. To perform a power cycle, you must unplug the printer's power cord. You also might want to consider power cycling the computer as well. Power down the computer, then power down the printer. Unplug the printer from the power source and wait at least 1 minute. The wait is important because it takes at least that long for the residual electricity in the printer to dissipate. After 1 minute, power up the computer and let it fully boot. Then power up the printer. If this procedure fails to clear the error, contact your printer manufacturer's support line. If it succeeds, test the printer by doing a self-test. Refer to the manual for how to do this. Then test the communication between the printer and computer by printing from several different applications.

Using compatible cartridges is great way to save money and reduce printing costs for your UK printer. Whether it's Brother compatible ink cartridges or Epson, Lexmark or any other printer brand, following this simple procedure is likely to solve many printer problems.
